Journey of Making Manto: From the Written Word to the Moving Image with Director Nandita Das

Join an evening of presentation and conversation with Director Nandita Das on her recently released film Manto.

The film, Manto(2018), is a story of two emerging nations, two faltering cities, and one man trying to make sense of it all. It follows the life of maverick writer Saadat Hasan Manto and his journey from India to Pakistan following India’s independence from the British Empire and during the Partition (1946-50).

Director Nandita Das has acted in more than 40 feature films in 10 different languages. She has a Master’s degree in Social Work and is a strong advocate for issues of social justice and human rights. Das made her directorial debut with the film Firaaq (2008), and also directed the play Between the Lines (2012) that engages with gender inequalities among the affluent, educated classes in India. She has served as Chairperson of Children’s Film Society of India (2009, 2012) and on the Jury for Cannes Film Festival (2005, 20013).

Edge of See: Twilight Engines. A Visit with Vishal Dar

Meet Artist-in-Residence, Vishal Dar, and enjoy an intimate studio reception with the artist at Headlands Center for the Arts.  The studio visit will be followed by an artist­-led tour to experience augmented reality light sculptures in former military batteries within the Marin Headlands National Park. Vishal K. Dar’s Edge of See: Twilight Engines uses site-specific light sculptures viewed through an augmented reality app to push our senses of vision, scale, motion, and time.

Please join SACHI for a private tour of this dazzling exhibition led by curator Martin Chapman. This exhibition explores the cultural and material exchanges between India and Europe through jewelry and precious objects ranging from the seventeenth century to the present. It features more than 150 pieces from The Al Thani Collection, all associated with Mughal emperors, maharajas, and their courts.

Martin Chapman is curator in charge of European decorative arts and sculpture and interim curator in charge of European art at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

SACHI (Society for Art & Cultural Heritage of India) and Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, are Proud to Present An Illuminating Presentation By Distinguished Scholar and San Francisco based historian Omar Khan.

Paper Jewels is the story of postcards during the Raj spanning India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Burma. Postcards were the Instagram of their time, depicting the subcontinent, its people, places and preoccupations to the world. The first color and global visual communications medium to represent India between 1892 and 1947, the talk weaves together postcard artists, photographers, and publishers that define the rich history of the postcard in the subcontinent.

A Reception follows in the Loggia at 3.30 PM.
